Study population
Among a study population of 6,595,271 adults, 272,657 had a new diagnosis of dementia during the follow-up period (Fig. 1). The mean duration of follow-up was 7.6 years, and the overall incidence of dementia during the entire study period was 4.1% (272,657/6,595,271), and AD in late oneset dementia (LOD) ranked the highest incidence (11.4%). The mean age of the study population was 55.9 years, and the mean age of dementia diagnosis was 76.5 years (Table 1). Individuals with AD were older than those with VaD, and participants with incident dementia had higher blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose, and total cholesterol at baseline compared to participants who remained dementia-free over follow-up (all P < 0.001).
