Sting reinvents “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” for the Alzheimer’s Association “Music Moments” album. In this behind-the-scenes video, Sting shares his personal connection to the song and his thoughts on the power of music to connect us to life’s most important moments.
“[This song] reminds me of me at that age, just being a little lost.”
After founding The Police in 1977, winning six Grammy Awards and being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for the band’s work together, Sting launched his solo career and won an additional 11 Grammys, four Oscar nominations and much more.
“(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” was released when Sting was a teenager — around the time when he’d spend his days trying to figure out the next step of his life while watching the ships pass along the river. “When you’re 16, the music you hear is so powerful and evocative of that time … [This song] reminds me of me at that age, just being a little lost.”
Sting saw the tragic effects of Alzheimer’s when he lost his mother-in-law to the disease. “It’s a possibility, a potential in all of our lives,” he says. “So whatever research we can do at this present time is absolutely important.”
