The National Institute of Health’s (NIH) National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) awards diversity supplements to increase diversity in the research workforce by providing training, mentorship and career development opportunities to individuals from racial and ethnic groups underrepresented in health-related sciences, from rural or disadvantaged backgrounds, and to individuals with disabilities. Studies show that more diverse teams who can capitalize on innovative ideas and distinct perspectives tend to outperform less diverse teams.
This year, the UCSF Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging was awarded six NIMHD diversity supplements to active grants, with four projects still ongoing. These grant supplements aid our faculty in building a diverse pipeline of new scientists and help launch academic research careers.
