Joan Jett: Hard to Grow Up | Alzheimer’s Association

Joan Jett re-releases her original song, “Hard to Grow Up,” for the Alzheimer’s Association “Music Moments” album. In this behind-the-scenes video, Jett shares her personal connection to the song and her thoughts on the power of music to connect us to life’s important moments.

“Songs really open people up in a way that sometimes just conversation can’t.”

Joan Jett is the frontwoman for Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, a founding member of the Runaways and a 2015 inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Jett wrote “Hard to Grow Up” after her mother died and she realized that she had no choice but to take on new responsibilities.

Fans have described how Jett’s music gave them the strength to get through some of the most difficult experiences in life, she recalls. Music can connect strangers and help them understand each other — “It’s some kind of magic,” she says. Jett hopes that by raising awareness of Alzheimer’s through music, these songs will inspire people to reach out to each other so that no one feels alone in their fight.
