But in the last 5 years it is international music genre, bollywood and bhagra is also included. The word Zumba is Colombian slang for either “buzz like a bee” or “move very fast”.
Zumba came to the U.S. in 2001, when Perez brought it to Miami, FLorida. In 2005, the Zumba Academy was founded to train instructors. It employs more than 200 employees.
There are over 14 million participants in over 150 countries, even in Antarctica. Zumba has become that famous that even classes occur at the Pentagon. Former First Lady Michelle Obama held a Zumba class on the front garden of the White House.
Generally instructors are female, yet in Latin countries where men are encouraged to dance from an early age, the rate of male instructors is rather high.
Burning calories is the biggest benefit you can get from Zumba. Zumba can burn calories between 500 -800 calories in every class which is for one hour.
Zumba classes cost $5-$20 per class, depending on location and level of instructor. The sales from clothing and home use DVDs are extremely high, making the business successful not just in a gym, but in your own home too. the Zumba line of clothing is a 120 million dollars business. The business as it stands is worth over 636 million dollars.
Types of Zumba Classes.
1. Aqua Zumba. Zumba in the pool. It is less stress on the joints and it is more effective as there is resistance both ways.
2. Zumba Sentao – it is newest specialty; it is Zumba using a chair. The whole workout is done using a chair.
3. Zumba Gold – it is Zumba for older adults. This Zumba will keep you fit in a fun way. The beauty of Zumba fitness is that you can modify your steps.
4. Zumbatomic. This Zumba is for kids. Zumba comes in the picture especially with increasing obesity in children.
5. Zumba Toning. These Zumba training classes add more of a toning focus onto the traditional cardio element of Zumba.
Number six, Zumba In The Circuit: This final form of Zumba combines traditional Zumba with circuit training in one class.
