The theme for this year’s Women in Medicine Month (#WIMmonth) is “Women in Medicine: Trailblazers, Advocates, Leaders.” This annual initiative, sponsored by the American Medical Association (AMA), gives the UC San Francisco Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging a chance each September to honor women’s contributions to medicine and to the department in patient care, research and education.
Women in Medicine Month is also a time to highlight advocacy related to women physicians and also health issues that impact women patients. Across the United States, radiology is the ninth largest medical specialty, but according to a 2014 report published in Radiology, it ranks 17th in female representation and 20th in underrepresented in medicine.
