Lost empathy in FTD linked to prefrontal hypoexcitability

Hypoexcitability of the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex could underlie loss of empathy in frontotemporal dementia (FTD), according to new research in a mouse model. The results of the study, led by Wei-Dong Yao, indicate that enhancing prefrontal neuronal activity restores empathy and could, therefore, represent a therapeutic approach for FTD.
