Novel Alzheimer’s disease amyloid β polymorph now revealed!
Sensitivity-enhanced solid-state NMR spectroscopy can be used in the structural characterization of amyloid β—the pathogenic protein involved in Alzheimer’s disease—as shown by scientists from Tokyo Tech. Their findings bring to light a novel polymorph of the protein and associated structural elements that can be targeted for disruption towards development of new AD treatment strategies. Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurological condition leading to dementia that worsens with age as patients exhibit cognitive, memory, and psychological deficits. While current therapies focus on relieving these symptoms to some extent, AD does not have a definite prevention or cure, suggesting the need for continued efforts towards understanding the biology of the disease.
