A new imaging-based method could enable the early detection and differentiation of a wide variety of neurodegenerative disorders characterized by the buildup of tau protein in the brain, suggests a study published October 29 in the journal Neuron. The researchers demonstrate that the method, which uses an imaging technique called positron emission tomography (PET), enables sensitive detection of tau deposits in mouse models and in patients with Alzheimer’s disease and various frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) disorders.
