Ascertainment of clinically diagnosed dementia and Alzheimer’s disease

Date and cause of hospital admissions were derived from Hospital Episode Statistics Admitted Patient Care (England), Patient Episode Database (Wales), and General/ Acute Inpatient and Day Case—Scottish Morbidity Record (Scotland). Incident clinically diagnosed all-cause dementia diagnosis was defined as primary or secondary diagnosis of dementia from the International Classification of Diseases—10th Revision (ICD 10), coded as F00 (Dementia in Alzheimer disease), F01 (vascular dementia), F02 (dementia in other diseases), F03 (unspecified dementia), G30 (Alzheimer disease), G31 (other dementias) or A81 (Sporadic Creutzfeld Jacob disease).
